Paws-Ability’s First Annual Bicycle Poker Run, scheduled forSaturday, October 29, will benefit the animal shelters and rescue groups ofBrunswick County. Participants do notneed to know how to play poker. Therewill be great prizes for the winning hand and the worse hand. There is no skill to this poker game, onlyfun.

Registration for the event will begin at 1:00 p.m. at theOcean Isle Inn on Ocean Isle Beach. Participantswill be directed to four locations on the island to draw a card for their pokerhand. Those who are unable to ride abicycle may participate in street ready golf carts. Theevent will end with a poolside party at the Ocean Isle Inn. The party will include hot dogs, hamburgers, beer andsoft drinks as well as a silent auction. The registration fee is $25 per rider.

Sponsorship for this event is offered at $200. Supporting sponsors will be listed on ourwebsite, on all printed material including posters and flyers, on t shirts andin newspaper ads. Paws-Ability’s 2nd adoption fair met with some very hot weather on Saturday that did keep some visitors away, but Saturday was a good day for 5 animals! Ask these 5 animals if your efforts were appreciated! You will probably get a big sloppy kiss as a reward. Volunteers worked very hard to plan, organize and make this adoption fair a plus for our rescue shelters. I am sorry some did not attend.

Cat Tails had 2 kitties adopted. One was a black cat. In case you are not aware, black cats are the LEAST likely cats to find homes! Imagine that! If you are ever looking to adopt a cat from Cat Tails, remember these “black beauties” and give them a chance. Black cats need love too! Cat Tails had a feral baby from OIB that has taught us all a lesson. The kitty was born feral and now lays on her back for tummy rubs! If you every thought feral cats are different from any other domestic cat, this certainly shows there is no difference. Isn’t it amazing what a little love will do!

NC Rescue League had a small dog adopted. He was a terrier mix and left with his new family actually smiling!

Adopt an Angel brought 2 adult, large dogs, Hannah and Blackie. They were surrendered by an elderly couple when their living arrangements changed due to health. The dogs were very loved and cared for and both were trained very well. Both dogs were adopted together. What a lucky family they are!

Our children’s program, PETUCATION, chaired by Cameron Brand handed out lots of brochures to introduce the program to elementary schools in the county.

Best Friends Biscuits, our new business member showed off their hand made dog treats. Her treats are sold at the Coffee dog in Calabash if you need more.

The day actually made about $400 for our shelters thanks in part to our raffle items that were donated and those fabulous hot dogs!

A rather large THANK YOU goes out to Cheri McLain and GreenUp! Cheri has worked on this adoption fair all year. Without the efforts of all volunteers and planners, Saturday would never have happened. Thank you for your time, efforts and your caring that made this day a success. Know that your efforts mean 5 animals have found forever homes! I am always so proud of this organization!

How we've spent our money in 2009

We have raised over $21,600 in 2009 and the following is how it has been spent.

Pet Me Safely books have been provided to SOAR and Tails U Win to give to each family with a child who adopt dogs from them. This program encourages a family commitment to the adoption and has decreased the number of dogs returned due to problems with the children in the household. Both rescue groups have enjoyed having the books available for families who adopt.

A donation was made to BARK to help fund the dog park in Shallotte.

Paws-Ability Adoption Boards have seen hundreds of dogs and cats find new homes. These boards are a great measurement tool for Brunswick County adoptions as they showcase available dogs and cats on a weekly basis from the shelters and rescue groups within Brunswick County.

We purchased a printer that has allowed us to print our own newsletters, Paws-Ability handouts, flyers and brochures for various events. This printer is used to print out the pictures of dogs and cats on the adoption boards as they are updated each week. We have not had to spend funds to print brochures and flyers for our events, which has saved money all year that can be donated to the needs of our rescue groups.

An OIB feral cat spay/neuter program receives funds specifically donated to this program and from the Ocean Isle Property Owners Association and the Town of Ocean Isle Beach. To date 98 cats have been spayed/neutered and either returned or adopted as kittens. This program has a tremendous potential with a grant request for 2010!

CAT TAILS –we completed the purchase of the tables to hold cages. These tables make it possible for volunteers to maintain NC state requirements for cleaning at Cat Tails. We also added wheels for all the cat cages that make it possible to move the large cages around when necessary. Without these additions, Cat Tails would lose some of the volunteers as they are not able to physically move the heavy cages to sanitize and clean the kennels.
Several cats had to be housed in individual cages because they required special diets. They now are housed all together in a large isolation cage where they can play together to pass the day.

JOY MAKERS – 4 cats with eye infections received much needed treatment and medications to make their life more comfortable.
A cat had her thyroid removed, thus improving her quality of life.
Several cats received revolution for a year along with medical treatment for various issues, making their lifes more comfortable.

SOAR – Lucy was abandoned at SOAR with severe eye and ear infections and serious skin issues due to neglect. She is now cared for, loved and a part of a real family.
Maggie found her way to a deck to have her 13 puppies. She was fostered at SOAR along with 7 of the puppies receiving needed care. Some of the puppies had serious illnesses but 5 survived and have all been adopted.
Toes is a senior cat that received radio-active iodine to replace the daily treatment for her thyroid condition.
Ernie was housed alone and in unbelievable filth for a year with his brother in Holden Beach. He received love and care for months before finding that special family to love him in spite of his neurological problems.
SOAR’s cat house has runways along the walls for exercise and play and the new floor will meet state requirements for cleaning and allows the cats to play with each other instead of living in individual cages alone day after day while they wait for adoption.
Buddy was pulled from animal control as a senior poodle that no one wanted. He now lives with a senior couple who thinks he is wonderful!
A retired vet in Wrightsville Beach offers his services to SOAR every Monday to check, treat and vaccinate any dog or cat in their care with the supplies Paws-Ability provided to begin their clinic. This has saved SOAR money on weekly vet trips.
Sadie sat frightened and alone at animal control until she got a chance at a new life thru SOAR. Now she lives a safe and happy life with a new family.
Gracie and 10 puppies lived in SOAR’s whelping house (supplies to build the whelping house were provided by Paws-Ability) receiving care and medications until ready to be adopted.
Training provided by Amy Van Dyne has helped many dogs make a better impression and find their new forever families!

TAILS U WIN –Roscoe received surgery for a broken leg.
Jasper, TBone, Katie and Marion have received treatment for heartworms. They are now adopted and living the good life.
Six of Maggie’s puppies went to Tails U Win for bottle feeding and care until adopted.
Trina was hit by a car. She had to have her leg amputated but is doing very well with a new family.
Cameron received treatment for an injured leg.
Woofie was treated for a bone infection due to untreated injury.
Cary received treatment for parvo before being adopted.

PAWS PLACE – Taffy received medical attention, surgery and medications to recuperate from neglect and abuse and has recently been adopted into a loving home.

Carolina was abandoned, with severe injury to her foot with 6 newborn puppies. They all received a safe place to call home, medication and care until adopted.
A necessary water system was provided to Paws Place.

FUREVER FRIENDS – There have been surgeries on 40 dogs and cats. These animals had such serious medical needs that other rescue groups could never have afforded their care but they received it through Furever Friends. All of the 40 dogs and cats that have received surgeries, medications, hospitalization and care have been adopted!

Funds for these needs were dispersed upon receipt of grant requests from 501 C3 animal welfare organizations located in Brunswick County requesting funds for needs of the animals in their care.

CrossFit 5K Run & Dog Jog

CrossFit Christmas Challenge 5K and 1 Mile Dog Jog Comes to Sunset Beach!

Don your Santa Hat and Reindeer Antlers, load up Fido or Lassie in the car and head down to the 1st Annual CrossFit Christmas Challenge on December 12! The event will be held on the beach at Sunset Beach, and will feature a 5K run and a 1 mile dog jog on the beach at low tide. Sunset Beach has one of the best running and walking surfaces for dogs and people on the East Coast -- and its right here in our back yard! Prizes for the best holiday costumes will be given to the top 3 dogs, individuals and team entrys. Participants in the 5K race will receive official event sweatshirts and a race packet featuring discount coupons from area merchants and sponsors. Participants in the 1 mile dog jog will receive "doggy bags" with snacks and pet-related merchandise and coupons.

Micro Chip Clinic

A micro-chip clinic will be held on November 7 at Capeside Animal Hospital located at Waterford in Leland from 1:30 to 3:30. To have your dog or cat micro-chipped will cost $25. Paws-Ability will host this clinic at half price to do our part for hurricane preparedness for our animals and as a fundraiser for Forever Friends Animal Rescue.

Spay Neuter Program Receives Funding

Ocean Isle Property Owners Association and the Town of Ocean isle Beach have joined with Paws-Ability (some Paws-Ability members have directed their donations toward this particular program) in assisting with the cost of operating a spay/neuter program for feral cats on Ocean Isle Beach. Run by volunteers, the spay/neuter or TNR (trap-neuter-release) program is a proven method of controlling the population of these cats. The cats were once domesticated animals, but abandoned or lost by their humans and forced to live their lives fending for themselves. Without a spay/neuter program, problems arise due to the overpopulation of the cats and with overpopulation, may come disease for the animals. The spay/neuter program assists with not only population control, but each cat receives a rabies and distemper shot. Feral cats help to control rodent and snakes on the island. With assistance from the Property Owners Association and the Town of Ocean Isle Beach, this community seems to be making good use of their monetary resources to make life better for both the people and the animals of Ocean Isle Beach.

The adoption fair is part of a statewide event (NC Week for Animals). We will have vendors, give-aways, demonstrations by groomers and vet tech (nail trimming, tooth brushing etc) and a dog trainer to demonstrate how to work thru particular issues and to answer questions. This event is intended to draw both the family who is interested in adopting a dog or cat, plus the pet owners. We want to introduce the community to the shelters and rescue groups in Brunswick County. This is your opportunity to actually watch lives begin anew through adoption.

Belk’s Charity Day

On May 2. Once again, we are selling coupons. A coupon is $5. Paws-Ability gets to keep the entire $5. When you take the coupon to Belks on May 2 between 6am-10 am, they will reimburse the $5 on your first purchase.

You may preshop, using the coupons anytime the week of April 27-May 1. If you preshop, you still get the entire $5 returned to you with your purchase, but you will not be allowed to actually pick up the item purchased with the coupon until after the Chairity Day event on May 2.

Micro Chip Clinic

We are scheduling reservations for yet another micro chip clinic on April 21 at Seaside Animal Care in Calabash. Micro chips are wonderful for disaster preparedness.

The micro chip cost is $25 per pet. This includes insertion of a micro chip (no more painful than a shot) and a lifetime registration fee to protect your pet if lost or stolen. Most all animal shelters and rescue groups have scanners that are used for new arrivals. It is one more way to protect your pet should they become separated from you. Collars and tags can come off or be taken off. A micro chip is permanent. We are nearing a sell out on the micro chips, but if interested, contact Carol Weaver: downy@atmc.net for your reservation.

'Pet Me Safely' to be Given to Adoptive Families

Paws-Ability has received a check from the Sea Trail Garden Club This check will support a new program that will provide a book titled “Pet Me Safely” to each family with children who adopt a new pet from local shelters, SOAR and Tails U Win. “Pet Me Safely” is written by local author, Mary Coffer and “Amadeus”. Both Mary and Amadeus believe in helping less fortunate dogs begin a new life with their adoptive family and are doing their part to help. With the financial assistance from Sea Trail Garden Club, Mary Cofer and Amadeus, Paws-Ability continues to promote responsible pet ownership.

Wag Shag

Paws-Ability, the Brunswick County non-profit organization that raises funds to aid no-kill animal shelters and animal rescue groups, held a festive event, Wag Shag, for animal lovers on Sunday afternoon, October 5, 2008 in the ballroom at Sea Trail Conference Center.
Wag Shag began with an old-fashioned picnic and pet parade, complete with the crowning of a King and Queen. Scruffy Gunter was crowned as Queen for the day while Dino Hoskins accepted the crown of the King. Seventy-five socialized, well dressed and well-behaved canine companions brought their humans came along to join the fun. Entertainment was provided by D.J. T Big Bopper, followed by dog dancing, shag and canine demonstrations. Doggie contests featured “Best dressed”, “best kisser”, “best tail wager and largest and smallest. Many canine attendees dressed smartly for the occasion. Riley Hare, quite the smart dresser, won the “best dressed” sporting a lovely turquoise tutu, complete with matching toenails! Canine escorts were also available for those desiring a doggie date for the afternoon. A grand time was had by all with over $7000 raised for the local animal shelters and rescue groups.

You are Invited to Paws-Ability's Wag Shag

Paws-Ability, the Brunswick County non-profit organization that raises money to aid animal shelters, animal rescue groups and pets in need, is inaugurating a festive event for animal lovers Sunday, October 5, 2008.

Dubbed the Wag Shag, the old-fashioned picnic and celebration will take place in an air-conditioned tent on the grounds of Sea Trail’s Convention Center from 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. You are invited to bring your socialized and well-behaved canine companion along to join the fun. In addition to the midday cookout, entertainment will be provided by D.J. The Big Bopper, and dog dancing and a shag demonstration will follow lunch. A cash bar will be available.

Several contests are planned for attendees who bring along their canine friends, and a pet photographer will be on hand to memorialize you and your pet’s participation. A few canine escorts will also be available for those desiring a doggie date for the afternoon.

Microchip Clinic

The Micro chip Clinic was held on June 21, 2008 at both Seaside Animal Care 9256 Beach Drive, Calabash, NC and in homes of special needs pets in the local area. It was a success. We injected 52 microchips and raised both money and the likelihood of 52 fewer lost animals in our neighborhoods. Paws-Ability hosted this clinic at a reduced rate to do our part for hurricane preparedness for our animals and as a fundraiser for the homeless animals of Brunswick County.The last two pictures are of Dr. Jim Williams of Fayetteville and Ocean Isle Beach, NC and Sandy Engelbert a vet tech from Kearnersville, NC during one of their many home visits to special needs cats and dogs. Pictured with Jim and Sandy is Kitty, one of their many clients from the microchipping clinic.

The Paws-Ability Adoption Boards Find Annie a New Home

Annie is a terrier-mix with the sweetest face and until today was at Brunswick County Animal Services. We put her on the WOOF! Adoption board last week. Paws-Ability has two adoption boards, one for dogs (Woof!) and one for cats (Meow!). These boards are placed in high traffic businesses around Brunswick county for a few weeks at a time, with the pictures and write-ups of dogs and cats waiting for adoption.

Today Cindy Tarantino stopped by the Scrapbook Addict in Shallotte to show off the adoption boards. Sande Gunter, owner of Scrapbook Addict in Shallotte, took one look at a dog on the board named Annie and said she was looking for a dog just like that! She immediately called Brunswick County Animal Services to see if Annie was still there. Sure enough, Annie was waiting for her. Sande flew out the door and drove straight to the shelter. Annie is now called SCRUFFY and has a wonderful new home with Sande. Last I heard she was getting a bath and a biscuit!

Thanks to the Paws-Ability committee responsible for the adoption boards ,Cindy, Adrienne, Theresa and Kathy, Scruffy has found her forever home! The adoption boards have seen a total of 25 homeless animals find their own forever homes! What a wonderful ending.

Paws-Ability Goes to the Wilmington Cat Show

Paws-Ability is excited to participate in the Wilmington Cat Show this year. We will be there to tell cat lovers attending about Paws’ mission to help Brunswick County rescue groups. We will also be selling Paws-Ability Mardi Paws T-shirts and posters.

The 3rd Annual CFA All Breed Cat Show is sponsored by the Coastal Paws Cat Club. It is Saturday, March 15, from 9am until 5pm at Cape Fear Community College's Schwartz Center, 610 Front Street in downtown Wilmington.

More than 200 pedigreed cats from around the country are expected to compete. See many of the 41 recognized cat breeds and talk with local and national breeders. Vendors will be offering cat toys, supplies, grooming products, jewelry, cat trees and more! The public is welcome. Admission is $6 adults, $4 seniors, $4 children, under 3 free. We had a great time raising funds for the
'forgotten animals of Brunswick County'
on February 5, 2008.
We will have our meeting on the 18th of February to determine which 501(c) animal organization's wish lists will receive funding from the Marti-Gras Pawsability Party. We will post the results soon after the meeting. Thanks again for all your help and attendance at this fund raiser and be sure to let the businesses above know how much you appreciate their help!

We had a very successful Marti Gras Paws-Ability party 2008. We don't have the final
figures yet, but we're certain we have raised a lot more than the 2007 party.

Brunswick Little Theatre will present "Sylvia" , a poignant, yet funny play about a changing family and their dog on March 7,8 and 9 at the Odell Williamson Auditorium. They will donate 10% of their profits to Paws-Ability to help the Brunswick County rescue groups and shelters. Paws-Ability will man the concession stand during each performance with all profits from concessions returning to help the animals of Brunswick County. Tickets to the production are $15. A membership to the Little Theatre is $30 which includes 2 tickets to "Sylvia". What a great way to build the Brunswick Little Theatre membership and help out Paws-Ability at the same time. Paws-Ability is a non profit organization that raises money to aid existing animal shelters, animal rescue groups and pet needs within Brunswick County. Mardi Gras Party. Feb 5, 2008

HELP SUPPORT Paws-Ability! We will host a Mardi Gras party on Fat Tuesday, Feb 5, 2008 at Sharky's on Ocean Isle Beach. It will be called Mardi Paws-Ability. Tickets will be $25 per person and will include fabulous New Orleans food. great fun and fabulous door prizes . Attendees will be eligible for door prizes to be given away each hour during the party. You must be present to win door prizes.

Raffle tickets will be available for $5 per ticket for a 42 inch LCD TV to be given away the night of the party. You need not be present to win the TV. Local delivery only though!

Mardi Gras costumes are encouraged but not required! Get out your beads and boas and come to Sharky's for a great time! All profits will be awarded to existing animal rescue efforts in Brunswick County.

Tickets for Mardi Paws-Ability are completely sold out. This is an anual event, so watch for us next year.
